Converting Decimals to Mixed Numbers

For Example

To write decimals, which are greater than 1, as mixed numbers:

1) Keep the whole number part as same.
2) Write the decimal part as a fraction.
3) Combine the whole number part and fractional part to write the mixed number.

For example:

Consider the decimal 2.35.

It can be written in the place value chart as:

Ones . Tenths Hundredths
2 . 3 5

The whole number part is 2.

The decimal part is 35 hundredths.

Write 35 hundredths as a fraction.

35 hundredths =
35
100

Now, simplify the fraction.

35
100
=
35 ÷ 5
100 ÷ 5
=
7
20

Now, write the mixed number:

2
7
20
So, the decimal 2.35 can be written as the mixed number 2
7 20
